Got milk?

milk

Have you ever been to the grocery store to pick up some milk and noticed how the majority of the skim milk is gone and wonder why? Well, so have I. I mean we assume because it is “healthier” and has less fat in it, which it does contain less fat in skim, but who is to say it is “healthier”. I mean in my opinion, milk isn’t so bad when you drink it in moderation and if you don’t have a lactose intolerance like myself. So what is up with all the skim milk being gone? people have this thought that the less fat something has, the healthier it is for you in ALL cases, and sometimes that isn’t so.

Man, oh, man do we have a fun topic today, because I am going to hear about all your choices when it comes to milk and why you choose one over the other, if you are a milk drinker. Don’t be scared, no judgement here, just curious what milk everyone prefers.

Now I know we also have 1%, rice milk, coconut milk, and raw milk, soy milk. Among many other types of milk, but I didn’t want to spend all day on a post going through every single type of milk available to man-kind so I chose the ones that I think are more popular than others. Not to mention, I listed one of my favorite milks, can you guess which one? Keep in mind, I may spend time on these other types of milk in a different post, but for now lets stick with the ones at the top.

Myth unbroken: Whole milk isn’t substantially made of fat (only 3-3.5 percent of fat).

The world “Whole” milk stems from the way it comes from the cow before processing.

So just basing it off of Whole, Skim and 2 percent.  People will argue both ways whether one is better for you, but it comes down to what else do you eat that contributes to your diet. Drinking milk in moderation, no matter the fat content is best for you rather than drinking it excessively. Yes, whole milk has higher saturated fats (not the good kind of fats) but this means very little if you are someone who doesn’t drink milk abundantly. I find that the best way to determine which type of milk to drink is to determine which one taste good to you, what are your health goals, and what is your diet like now.

Almond milk

  • Can contain as much calcium and vitamin D as dairy milk
  • Rich in potassium, magnesium, manganese, Vitamin E, copper and selenium
  • Naturally low in saturated fats
  • no dietary cholesterol
  • Normally few calories
  • Some studies have proven that we absorb the nutrients better in dairy milk vs almond milk
  • Almond milk typically cost more
  • High in omega-3
  • Contains no animal by-products (if this is important to you)

By the way, if you took a guess at which type of milk is my favorite, the answer is Almond milk, but I grew up on whole milk and I have no issue drinking 2 percent milk, but I am also lactose intolerant so I normally don’t drink dairy milk much anymore, Especially since it makes me bloated. This is not to say that Almond milk is more “healthier” but it does have some great benefits, but this also depends if you buy the sweetened or the unsweetened Almond milk, so take that into consideration.

I figure I would let all of you decide which milk is best for you, because if you leave it up to me, I am going to tell you that it depends on your needs and goals in wanting to be healthy and fit. I will then make mention drink it in moderation and you won’t have to make HUGE decisions at the grocery store when it comes to choosing which milk. 1. Beyond the fat content of milk being an issue, there are lots of reasons to avoid milk (dairy products in general). From what I have found, serious, non-dairy industry funded, research seems to indicate a number of health risks related to dairy.

  2. Whole Vitamin D all the way… Humorously, the last commenter failed to mention that ‘non-dairy’ research was funded by the soy bean industry. Milk is good for me and it’ll take an army to keep me from a glass when the chocolate chip cookies come out!

  3. This is going to sound insane to some people but we drink cows milk. Like unprocessed milk just straight from the cow and I guess that’s my favorite type of milk but I really like almond milk too 🙂

    1. No way? I have heard of this, which from what I have gathered it is best from the cow because of there being no use of steroids and it being unprocessed. I always wondered what it would taste like coming from a cow..
That is an unique experience, very cool indeed.

    2. Yeah I think it’s the healthiest milk because it’s completely unprocessed. And omg it tastes so amazing compared to packaged milk which kind of loses its taste. Once you drink fresh cows milk you will never want anything else! If you every visit Africa you should definitely try it 🙂

    3. Yes, I should try it. I think that would blow my mind to drink milk straight from a cow. Does your family farm, or own land to keep cows and livestock? I would also assume it would save money from not having to purchase milk.

    4. No we don’t own a farm but we buy the milk from a farmer nearby. He usually brings us fresh milk every morning. It’s still a lot cheaper than buying packaged milk 🙂

    5. Yes I know we have been finding out so much cool stuff about each other lately which is so fun! I mean the best part of blogging is just meeting new people and sharing experiences! 🙂

    6. I never thought that with blogging, I would end up speaking with so many people on a daily basis. I actually didn’t think my blogging would be of any use, or catch anyone’s attention. From where I started and where I am now, it has been taking off day by day with new experiences.
I have been working on wanting to be a freelance blogger/writer in the meantime on top of wanting to get certified for personal training. Seems as though blogging has inspired me to take it more seriously as a source of income and exposure 🙂

    7. Yes I didn’t think that I would ever meet so many people or even get any followers but it’s awesome how everyone in the blogging world is so supportive and are so fun to socialise with!
Yeah I have actually always wanted to be a writer ever since I was little and I feel like blogging helps me keep that dream alive. A lot of people actually do make a good amount of money from blogging so being a freelance writer would be a great idea for you 🙂

    8. Unlike most bloggers, you don’t necessarily have a niche in blogging. I mean poems are your main course, but you typically post anything that is under the sun and makes sense to talk about. I suppose you are a rare breed of people, because most people would think you need to have a niche in order to have a successful following base, but you have proven that wrong. I chose a niche since it went along with my major and I knew a lot about it, but also have noticed my following isn’t as great as yours, but then I may have started later than you have. Nonetheless you do great. I was wondering if when I get the chance to create the blog post about niches and blogging if you would like to be a guest speaker on it, I think it would be fun and a new experience. After I think things through more and have it well planned out, I can send you details via email.
Yes, many people make good income from it, but it takes some work just like anything else. Hard, earned work.

    9. Yes I didn’t really know what I wanted to post on my blog when I first started out. I just knew that I wanted to write and that was about it and I have found that writing about not just one thing in particular is best for a blog like mine. Yeah I have been gaining followers lately but I think you too will soon be gaining a lot more followers because your blog is so informative and inspiring at the same time and you really are a great writer. I would absolutely love to be a guest speaker on your post and while you still haven’t come up with another blog it would be wonderful if you guest post on my blog if you have something you want to post that doesn’t exactly go with your blog topics. Please do let me know more when you start the blog! My email is poojagudka66@gmail.com.

Yup everything takes a lot of work but I think once you get the hang of blogging for income and if you work hard it will really be worth it!

    10. Thank you for sharing your email with me, I will have it wrote down so I don’t lose it, also appreciate you asking me to do a guest post on your page as well, I have no problem with doing so, especially since it doesn’t have to be about fitness, it will be a fun thing for me to do. I say, if you come up with a topic you would want me to speak on (outside of fitness), let me know. I don’t mind the topics, I am an open book for the most part when it comes to writing. I will probably be emailing you with details within the next couple of weeks, so that we can discuss it further. I am excited to have you as a guest post! especially since many new bloggers will appreciate your take on the topic 🙂

    11. Your welcome! To be honest you can write about pretty much anything on my blog whenever you want. Just email it to me and I’ll publish it but if I do have any ideas for something specific I’ll definitely let you know. Thanks I can’t wait to be a guest writer!

    1. Lynne,
Hello, that makes both of us (being lactose intolerant), the joys. lol.
I have not given rice milk a taste. My personal thoughts on rice milk is that is contains a list of vitamins and minerals, which are good for us and I am all for that. The only discovery I have found that might be a con, is it has significantly lower calcium than dairy milk. Although, if you get enough calcium in your diet, then this shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Otherwise with it not containing lactose, it is a winner for us lactose intolerant people.

  4. Love this post! 🙂 I’m a huge fan of whole milk, always have been and always will 🙂 But I do also like almond milk! Though around here it’s much more pricey. Once drank milk in Greece which had an even higher percentage of fat than the normal one and it was simply delicious 😀 Love, Sarah
P.S. so sorry for not having visited your blog in a while!!

    1. Sarah,
Hey!!! How is it going? Feels like it has been a long time since hearing from you, although you are not totally to blame, it takes two 🙂 no worries. Here too, almond milk is pricier, which is why when I am feeling poor, I get regular dairy milk 😛 haha.
I have always wanted to visit Greece, I hear it is beautiful and has some great history landmarks, would be a splendid trip, although I know their economy is taking a hit.
I am happy to hear you are alive and among the blog world still, I thought maybe you retired way early and decided to take that vacation we talked about! haha. It is always nice hearing from you, thank you for stopping by, and I will do my best to not be a stranger!

    2. It has been quite a long time since we two had some wordpress-fun, hasn´t it? Glad to see that everything is ok with you 🙂
Haha! Wished I´d gone to that lonely island of ours 😉 I could definitely need it!
Btw, Greece would be a perfect start for that, although you might have to share the island with a couple of tourists too 😉 You should definitely try to get there someday, it´s such a beautiful country, everything is so full of history, the sea and beaches are great, the food is more than good… well, I guess you get my point 😉 That their economy has taken a hit is even more reason to go there for a holiday and spent some money, they can definitely use it! 🙂 It´s been quite a long time since I´ve been there, but I think the essential things don´t change that much. Maybe I can go there next year, that would be just so lovely!
Looking forward to your nexts posts and comments!! 🙂 Have a great day!
      HUGE HUGS!!! xxx 🙂
