Pop (aka Soda) why it isn’t any good

Coca Cola, Cold Drink, Soft Drink, Coke

I will assume we have all come to terms with the fact that drinking pop (soda) is no good for you. Whether it be ‘dark’ or ‘light’ pop, diet or non diet, caffeine or no caffeine, pop just isn’t any good for you – but we still like it. For many people, it is their downfall in their health, it is something that might drink on a daily basis, or something they have with every meal & for others, they might think by drinking a diet pop or sprite instead of coke, they are much better off, but that starts to not matter if you don’t know how to control your intake of it (moderation). Everyone’s “moderation” will be different, because some people can cut it out as a whole and others will have to learn to cut down the amount consumed. For example if you are someone who drinks it daily and consumes about 5-10 on a daily basis, maybe your “moderation” is drink 2 daily instead of 5-10 or drink 5 per week.. who knows, but still it means cutting down.

Another thing people need to understand is that cutting down pop for someone who loves it, and drinks it often is just as hard as taking a cigarette from a smoker or coffee from an avid coffee drinker, it takes time and discipline and a willingness. So before we go around telling people who drink this to “stop drinking it” or “you shouldn’t be drinking”, we need to remember this isn’t going to be an easy task for them. Typically when i have had past clients be honest and mention they drink pop often, I didn’t mention that it was “bad for them” or “they shouldn’t be drinking it”, because this is something they already knew and I didn’t tell them to “quit drinking pop” or to “give pop up and work on drinking more water”, because again they might not want to stop drinking it (people don’t like being told what to do), instead I changed my perspective and found a way that worked in order for them to see the health benefits from drinking less of it, or shared ideas to help them try different liquids in their diet – this didn’t mean they didn’t continue to drink it, this only meant I gave them options and helped them to see benefits that come from drinking less or none.. but if they chose to keep drinking it, then.. they knew the consequences of their results.

The above information was just a disclosure, so that no one thought of this blog post as “JUST SAY NO” Act against pop, this is not what this is, this is an informative post to bring light on the negatives pop can have on the body and the mind honestly. Also, to add to this, I used to drink pop often, Sprite was my choice of pop ( I don’t really like dark pop) but I can tolerate it, I prefer lighter pop, now I don’t drink pop at all (rarely) .. it wasn’t too difficult for me, but it got harder every so often when I was craving it – but I found something better for me that I like just as well & don’t give thought to pop much at all these days. Now to the good stuff..

Pop – Why it isn’t any good for you

  1. It dehydrates the body, which means you end up more thirsty even after drinking it – which is some of the reason why people will drink more after they have had a glass because it doesn’t quench your thirst.. it just continues to make you more thirsty
  2. High sugar content – this is explanatory, this can lead to diabetes, insulin resistance, and extra weight gain from the sugar becoming fat
  3. Contains caffeine – studies have shown too much caffeine consumption can lead to other health issues
  4. Lack of nutrients
  5. Bad for the teeth – dentist say it can lead to plaque build up and gum disease
  6. Contains high frutose cough syrup- studies have said that it is has been associated with increased risk of heart disease and other health concerns
  7. Obesity- Drinking pop does not mean you will be obese but if you don’t have self control over the amount you drink and live a sedentary lifestyle, it can lead to obesity
  8. Contains phosphoric Acid- This interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, which can lead to osteoporosis, cavities, and bone softening
  9. The artificial sweeteners in diet pop are no better than the real sugars in non diet pop – Many of the artificial sweeteners have proven to do more harm than help – some of them being linked to different health problems.
  10. Mentally- I have noticed the energy you may get from the pop last about maybe a hour.. and then you are back to being “gloomy”, lazy and probably have little momentum (feel sluggish). For those that drink it for energy or to wake up, the sugar will wear off and when it does, consuming more will do the same and it will become a cycle – someone told me they had to switch pop because Mountain Dew no longer gave them the kick they needed since their body was getting used to it. (This wasn’t during a study, this is just a reference to tell how this sugar works)

Please feel to share, comment, like and follow. If you or anyone else you know loves pop, feel free to share what kind you drink, why you drink it and if you have noticed any negative signs from drinking too much of it. Thank you for reading.

  1. I like the list for why it isnt good for you. Good reminder! And I didn’t grow up with any soda in the house (Lol yeah i call it soda, the proper name ;)) so I never really crave it. And when I drink it I can only have a few sips before I’m done. My parents not keeping any soda in the house when we were little really helped me out I guess! I’m starting to like sparkling water now though – esp with lime mmm lol

    1. I think soda sounds weird, up North we call it “pop” for the most part. When people call it soda, it sounds weird! xD
That is great that your parents didn’t keep it in the house, that definitely benefited you. What kind of pop do you enjoy?
Also, sparkling water is very good, I used to drink those a lot but haven’t had them in years. Never had the lime added though, sounds almost like Sprite 🙂

    2. Lolll pop is so weird Shay-lon!
I really don’t like soda that much but if I had to choose Dr pepper. But its too sweet & makes me feel sick after a while lol. I am not a sweets person either normally. But i can eat a whole bag of chips & be perfectly fine loll..
But I got the plain sparkling water, and added lime & mint and it was so good! And the bubbles make me feel more full.
Have you always lived up North? I have lived in the South forever :))

    3. Yes, everyone is the South says “Soda”, weird ones. lol. Hmm Dr. Pepper, haven’t had one in years, but it does taste good. I am not a sweets person either! crazy, I could eat a whole bag of chips as well and be content 😛 we have something in common Jess. Lime & mint, both have good health benefits supposedly. I have not ALWAYS lived up North.

I have resided in Texas for 2 years and I have lived in Colorado for 4.5 years of my life as well.

    5. You know how I know you love sweet potatoes? Bc you wrote a whole post about them! Subconsciously you love them. Lolll kettle cooked are the BEST! So funny I eat a whole bag way more often than i should. Lol & don’t you dare bring me a soda.

    6. I want to destroy them and destroy the farms that grow them! I am going to corrupt the world and rid of sweet potatoes, forever! muahahahhhahahah >.<
What flavor kettle cooked do you like? I thought you said you love Dr. Pepper, it would be rude to not bring one along 😉

    7. Oh goodness, if that should ever happen, then I will know the world is ending.
Salt and vinegar sounds good, I will have to try it. As a kid I loved sour cream and onion, but now a days, the original flavor of kettle cooked is what I get, sometimes I get the one with the olive oil 🙂

    8. Really? Yes! I will still eat sour cream and onion but that was when I was eating Lays brand chips. The olive oil ones are very good and probably are no healthier than the salt and vinegar but who cares! hahahaha

    9. Hmm, like you are a clone of myself? sounds about right. Tomorrow I work all day after getting off work in the morning, and I am having to rush my morning workout for tomorrow, so I will probably make it a cardio day. ugh. Saturday I need to start looking over study material once or twice more and clean the house – I also have a basketball game to attend in the morning, I have a busy couple of weeks to say the least..
what do you have going on over the weekend?

    11. Nooo, not exercise sci related, but it is a part time leasing associate position at the apartment I will be living in. I think it will be good to have while in school bc it’s part time & right where i live lol :))

    12. I was debating between exercise sci/health related jobs & the job I just got at my apartment. I chose my apartment bc it was convenient (won’t have to drive in snow), plus my supervisor seemed super flexible & friendly over the phone, I will be up on my feet giving tours a lot (I dont like sitting jobs) , & I’ll learn a little about sales!

    13. Yeah just doing both right now while I’m getting prerequisites. Idk about when i get to PT school though! Is your work ex sci related right now? I know youre getting your personal training cert soon after the test!

    14. You probably won’t time for work when you get accepted at a PT school. Right now you are working on BA for PT or Masters for PT, then you will move on to Dr PT right?
      No, mine is not.

    15. Idk if I will, but I can’t imagine not making money for 3 years in PT school. And I have my BS in exercise science, & now taking prerequisites to get accepted to Dr PT program. I am taking classes I never took for my bachelor’s (example: chem, physics, medical terminology). What do you do for work? Do you enjoy It? I am 27 :))

  2. Proofread number six…. Pop doesn’t contain high fructose “cough” syrup. I’m assuming spell checker got you on that one. Also, pop or coffee has never, in history, dehydrated a person. This is one of those “rest of the story” falsehoods that just gets passed around as if it were true. In reality, it works out to only 4% less than pure, good old-fashioned H2O.

Pop still makes one’s butt big, and that’s bad enough!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, I didn’t mean “cough:, thank you for catching, I mean’t to just say fructose syrup.
Also, it does dehydrate you, both of my professors have told me so (exercise science professors) although you have the right to disagree, I find it dehydrating when I drink it.

    2. Also, I am still sticking with “pop dehydrates you”, BUT, this does not mean you have to agree, obviously. If you stick by your sources, then that is fine, but I am not changing my post to match your source, because I like my source much better ;D

    3. P.S You do not need to further try to prove your point with anymore sites. I am sticking with what I have – Again, I did not mean to sound offensive in my original statement explaining everything. I just wanted to basically let you know why I can’t solely depend on either one of those sites if I want to get where I want in life .. otherwise good chat!

    4. No offense taken, a lot of myths exist today because industries, governments, or academia need them to have a common enemy. I never expected to see the blunt candor you used in explaining why you’re sticking with this one. I appreciate your honesty.

    5. Jim,
This is going to sound very offensive, but I don’t mean it negatively. For one I will not read the “Mayo clinic” nor “Wed MD” site as “evidence” in backing your statement. For one, no one in my field/major would take me seriously. 2) The editor of huge fitness magazine quotes “Not one of my writers will ever cite either one of those sites if they want to keep a job”, 3) neither one of my professors who have much much higher degrees than me didn’t allow any of us to cite either one of those sites for the same reason the editor does not allow writers for the magazine to. & 4) both of those cites are only good enough for very generalized questions.. and even then it is questionable if they are not backed by a reputable person in the field. To keep this short and sweet, if I want to work with a magazine publication, I cannot base my research off those sites and If I want to take my future personal training, etc serious, I cannot use those sources to back me.. and expect people to not question it. I only use those sites for general questions, maybe some definitions and possibly some other forms of help that don’t need backing because I know better. For anyone who is reading this comment, if I ever cite either one of those sites, I will mention and say why I used them..

    6. Um, I didn’t link WebMD, and the Mayo Clinic is one of the most respected medical facilities in the US. I sent the second link because it sources each scientific study.

That corrected, I understand and won’t comment further. I get it.

    7. Although this does not mean, nobody should use them, because the general public should when and if they feel they need to if a professional is not available.
